Facial Plastic Surgeons

Plastic surgeons who operate on the face come from several specialties and undergo extensive training to complete their board certification. Some of our plastic surgeons have pursued specialized training in cosmetic surgery to improve the appearance of the face and neck. Training and expertise make a big difference ensure you experience safe surgery with strict regulations that protect you as a patient. It also means the surgeon you meet at Duke is hand-selected because of their expertise and specific training in the surgeries they provide.

Will insurance cover cosmetic surgery?
Insurance does not cover procedures performed for purely aesthetic reasons. Our financial counselor will discuss this with you and provide an estimate to help you determine if an aesthetic procedure is the right approach for you.

Cosmetic Surgeries

Facelift

A facelift reduces the appearance of wrinkles and jowls in the lower face and jawline. Our surgeons use incisions hidden around your ears to lift the muscles, fat, and skin of the face and restore them to a natural and more youthful appearance. Facelift techniques and technology have changed dramatically in recent years, allowing our surgeons to give a longer-lasting, more natural result that will help you to look like the best version of yourself. Your surgeon may recommend other procedures at the time of your facelift surgery to balance your result and give you the best outcome.

Neck Lift

A neck lift lifts and tightens the skin and muscles in the neck. This powerful procedure can help create a smoother and more refined neck and jawline. In younger people with “heavy necks,” neck lift can transform the shape of the neck and jawline especially when combined with liposuction and skin tightening. A neck lift is also frequently combined with a facelift to maximize the natural result of your neck lift and create harmony between the face and neck. Your surgeon will discuss what will give you the best result tailored to your specific needs.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty or “nose job” surgery can be performed to correct the appearance and/or function of the nose. Because it is one of the most complicated procedures in plastic surgery, your surgeon will want to specifically discuss your surgical goals to make sure you get the result you want. Many people undergo rhinoplasty for poor nasal breathing due to a deviated septum, weak cartilage, or previous injury to the nose. Our surgeons address these problems through small incisions and dramatically improve nasal breathing. Changes to the appearance of the nose can be subtle or dramatic depending on your anatomy and your discussion with your surgeon.

Our surgeons commonly improve nasal appearance by straightening a crooked nose, reducing a hump along the bridge of your nose, improving round or droopy tips, and balancing nasal appearance to match your facial harmony. We also perform revision rhinoplasty to help change or improve the results of a previous rhinoplasty.

Ear Pinning

Otoplasty, or "ear pinning," corrects protruding ears by changing their shape and position. Ear cartilage is reshaped through an incision made on the back of the ear. Prominent ears may be treated in early infancy without surgery by molding performed by a craniofacial orthodontist. Surgical correction in children is typically done after age six but can be performed at any point through adulthood. If you have always been bothered by the shape of your ears, it is never too late to consider otoplasty. Our surgeons work with you to achieve your goals.

Facial Implants

Facial implants enhance the appearance of specific facial structures and can be custom-made using computer guidance to achieve a perfect fit for your face. Areas typically addressed with facial implants are the cheekbones, forehead, chin, and jawline. Our surgeons are well-versed in these techniques and can help you decide if facial implants would work for you.

Brow Lift

This surgery repositions the soft tissues in the forehead, tightens sagging skin, and removes deep worry lines. There are several variations that can be offered depending on the patient’s needs and concerns. Recovery from this outpatient procedure may take up to 10 days.

  • An endoscopic brow lift allows elevation of the brows through minimal incisions.
  • A temporal brow lift is done from an incision along the lateral (side) hairline, allowing tightening of the lateral brow.
  • A direct brow lift removes skin and muscle above the eyebrows.
  • A coronal forehead lift requires an ear-to-ear incision above the forehead to remove excess skin and elevate the entire forehead and brow.

Eyelid and Eyebrow Surgery

Many people come to us seeking improvement in the appearance of their eyes. Upper and lower eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty removes excess skin or fat around the lids to make the eyes appear lighter and more open with a more youthful appearance. To balance this improvement in the eyelids, often a brow lift may be necessary to lift the forehead and eyebrows into a more natural and open position. Both operations are done through small, easily concealed incisions and can have a dramatic improvement in facial aging. Your surgeon can also help to evaluate if extra skin around your eyelids may be blocking your vision and if your insurance may cover your eyelid surgery.

Corrective Jaw Surgery

We perform a variety of procedures to improve appearance and correct minor and major dental irregularities including misalignment of the jaw and teeth.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a powerful way to remove unwanted fat from the face and neck. Through small incisions, surgeons use a suction device to directly remove fat in specific areas. Not all patients are candidates for liposuction and an experienced surgeon can help determine if liposuction would be safe for you.

Consultation and Examination

We discuss your reasons for pursuing facial cosmetic surgery as well as your desired outcome and expected results. We conduct a thorough medical history, including your family history, general health status, previous operations, and any medications you may be taking. We examine your facial features and take photographs for your medical record. Finally, we recommend a course of treatment that meets your needs. We discuss the potential risks and complications and your recovery.

Blood Tests

Pre-surgical testing may include blood tests to assess your liver and kidney function and to determine if you have any infection, blood disorder, or anemia that may have gone previously undetected.

Why Choose Duke

Minimally Invasive Techniques
Whenever possible, we use small incisions to perform cosmetic procedures. A minimally invasive approach results in less bleeding and risk for infection and helps you recover faster than with traditional surgical methods.

Recover at Home
Our team follows a set of medical guidelines called enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) which puts patient comfort and safety first -- before, during, and after surgery. This means less pain and faster recovery for you in the comfort of your own home.

A Team Approach
Your medical team may include plastic surgeons; oculoplastic surgeons; ear, nose, and throat specialists; ophthalmologists; aestheticians; nurses; and other staff who work together to ensure you get the best possible care.

Nonsurgical Options and Skin Care Therapies
Our aestheticians, doctors, and surgeons may recommend nonsurgical options and skin care therapies to improve and rejuvenate your appearance, including laser skin resurfacing, hair removal, microdermabrasion, photo facials, chemical peels, wrinkle-relaxing injections (Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin), and facial fillers. General skin care applications are also available to improve and rejuvenate skin affected by age, excessive sun exposure, discoloration, and skin-related disorders.
