About Me

For more than 20 years, I have had the privilege of taking care of children with some of the most difficult diagnoses, including leukemia, lymphoma, and other cancers, CGD and other immune deficiencies, thalassemia, sickle cell disease, and other blood disorders, and leukodystrophy, MPS, and other inherited disorders. Specializing in bone marrow transplants and hematopoietic cell transplants, I strive for my patients’ success. I feel fortunate to be providing care during a time when advancements in the medical field, fueled by incredible discoveries in immunology, drug development, genomics, and computing, have brought us closer to providing a good donor for almost all patients requiring a BMT or HCT.

Clinical Focus and Research

My Research Interests

The practice of BMT and UCBT (umbilical cord blood transplantation) has matured over the past couple decades, but even now there are a number of challenges. These challenges are a source of continued inspiration and resolve for expanding access to and broadening the utility of BMT and UCBT. These challenges continue to guide my professional and research career. My research interests have spanned a number of areas, including the outcomes of unrelated cord blood transplantation for inherited metabolic diseases (IMD), post-transplant adenovirus infections, anti-viral drug development, and the impact of molecular determinants of donor-patient alloreactivity (Killer immunoglobulin-like receptors, high-resolution HLA alleles, and non-inherited maternal HLA alleles) on transplant outcomes. Over the last 20 years, I have authored and co-authored about 40 peer reviewed journal articles and submitted almost 100 abstracts for national and international meetings.
