About Me

Duke University is my alma mater (class of 1979), and I returned in 1987 after completing my clinical training to join the faculty in the School of Medicine. As part of what was then the newly formed Bryan Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, I was fortunate to be here when our Center scientists discovered the major genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, a gene called APOE. This major discovery changed the way the global scientific community views the biology of Alzheimer's disease, and it set us here at Duke on a path of trying to develop sensible treatment and prevention approaches for memory disorders. Today, we are much closer to answers. It is an exciting and rewarding time to be in the clinical practice of memory disorders as well as part of a scientific process that may one day have a positive impact on all of our lives.
