Edward Buckley, MD
Edward Buckley, MD, provides administrative oversight for the medical student curriculum, the Office of Curriculum, and the Registrar. He also serves as chair of the Curriculum Committee and is a member of the Admissions Executive Committee. He is responsible for the daily activities surrounding medical student education as well as facilitating the development of new curricular initiatives and programs.
Buckley received his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering and his medical degree from Duke University. He stayed at Duke for an internship in medicine and a residency in ophthalmology. He performed a two-year fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and neuro-ophthalmology at the University of Miami ’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. He returned to join the faculty at Duke, where he currently is a professor of ophthalmology and pediatrics and division chief for pediatric and neuro-ophthalmology.
Buckley is a renowned expert in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus. He has published six books, 35 book chapters, and over 100 peer-reviewed articles. He is particularly known for his innovative treatments of complicated eye muscle problems and congenital cataracts, having presented over 300 lectures around the world. He is the director of one of the premier pediatric ophthalmology fellowship programs in the country and has trained over 30 clinical and research fellows. He is chair-elect of the American Board of Ophthalmology, chair of the Ophthalmology Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and president-elect of the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. In his role as associate dean he was responsible for overseeing a major revision of the medical school curriculum. He is currently assisting the Duke/Singapore partnership to create a research-oriented medical school in Singapore modeled after this curriculum.
