nunley.jpgJames A. Nunley II, MD, is the Goldner Jones Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and interim chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is nationally known for his expertise in foot and ankle surgery and for initiating the ankle replacement program.

Nunley received his undergraduate degree from Duke University and his MS and MD degrees from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. He completed two years of training in general surgery at the University of California, Los Angeles, followed by five years of subspecialty training in orthopaedic surgery at Duke University Medical Center.

A full-time member of Duke’s teaching faculty since 1980, Nunley has been an active professor, clinician, and researcher. He served as chief of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery and became interim chair of the department in 2010.

In addition to giving hundreds of national and international presentations, Nunley is the author of nearly 200 publications related to his work as an orthopaedic clinician and research focused on improving foot and ankle surgery. He has also authored two text books on foot and ankle surgery.

Nunley has served as president of numerous orthopaedic associations, including the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. The American Orthopaedic Association awarded Nunley with the prestigious American-British-Canadian Traveling Fellowship.
