David L. Epstein, MD
David Lee Epstein, MD, MMM, is a clinical professor of ophthalmology and chair of the Duke University Medical Center Department of Ophthalmology. He specializes in all aspects of glaucoma management and treatment and has extensive experience with glaucoma laser surgery.
A Chicago native, Epstein received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He completed a residency in ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI) of Harvard Medical School. He left to serve in the U.S. Air Force from 1970-72, returning to complete his training and a fellowship at MEEI. He then joined the faculty of MEEI and Harvard Medical School in 1978, serving as the director of the glaucoma consultation service from 1982 to 1991.
Epstein spent a year as a professor of ophthalmology at the University of California at San Francisco before becoming a professor and chair of Duke’s ophthalmology department in 1992. In 2001 he returned to school and received a master of medical management degree from Tulane University’s School of Public Health in New Orleans.
The author of more than 175 scholarly papers, Epstein is a glaucoma clinician and scientist with both clinical and laboratory research interests. Despite his teaching and administrative duties, he maintains an active glaucoma research program at Duke.
He has received several awards for his work and served as president of the Association for research in Vision and Ophthalmology in 1992-93. Epstein also has served on numerous national scientific advisory boards, often as chairman.
