Michael J. Morsberger, CFRE

Michael J. Morsberger, CFRE, is vice president for Duke Medicine Development and Alumni Affairs.

In this position, he heads fund-raising and alumni relations activities for all of Duke Medicine, which includes Duke University Health System and the academic and research efforts associated with the School of Medicine and School of Nursing.

Morsberger came to Duke from the University of Virginia (UVa) Health System and UVa Health Foundation in Charlottesville. While at the University of Virginia, he served as associate vice president of development and executive director. He was instrumental in planning the health system’s $500-million campaign and served as a senior member of the university’s development team in launching the largest fund-raising endeavor ($3 billion) at a public university in the United States.

Prior to his work at the University of Virginia, he spent nine years at John Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, where he oversaw advancement for the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center. Morsberger was privileged to be involved in the largest gift in Johns Hopkins history, when philanthropist Sidney Kimmel committed $150 million to name the center in 2001.

Morsberger holds a BS in journalism from Radford University and an MA in philanthropy and development from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota. In addition to his work at the University of Virginia and Johns Hopkins, he has served as director of fund development at Mount Washington Pediatric Hospital Foundation in Baltimore, director of development at Calvert Hall College Preparatory School in Maryland, and manager of annual fund and foundation relations for the National Aquarium in Baltimore. Mike has broad experience on several non-profit boards and has been a frequent speaker on the topic of fundraising and philanthropy at national conferences.
