Michael Cuffe, MD

Michael Cuffe, MD, was appointed vice president for medical affairs of the Duke University Health System in 2005. Prior to this appointment, Cuffe served as vice chair of medical affairs for the Department of Medicine as well as in various leadership roles in the Duke Clinical Research Institute. Cuffe was appointed vice dean for medical affairs of the Duke University School of Medicine in 2008.

In his position as vice president for medical affairs, Cuffe works to enhance physician relations and to improve the quality of care and patient experience provided by Duke across the health system. He also works to improve patient safety systems including helping to introduce an ambulatory medical record that will aid physicians and patients alike. As vice dean, Cuffe oversees continuing and graduate medical education, as well as clinical department and faculty reviews and strategy.

Cuffe is a graduate of MIT, received his MD degree at the Duke University School of Medicine in 1991, and also completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in cardiology at Duke. His medical interests include general cardiology, chronic heart failure, and ischemic heart disease, while his research interests consist of medical safety, clinical trial reporting, hospitalization due to heart failure, and systems of medical care.
