Thank you for your generous gift to the Friends of Duke Medicine Fund. Thanks to our many friends, volunteers, and grateful patients, more than $104,000 was raised during the 2010-11 fiscal year. Your gifts helped to provide a critical source of funding for specific initiatives identified by Chancellor for Health Affairs Victor J. Dzau, MD.
This year, Dr. Dzau directed funds to School of Medicine Dean Nancy Andrews, MD, PhD and Duke University Health Systems Executive Vice President William J. Fulkerson, Jr., MD.
Dean Andrews will use the funds to advance her initiative on Health and the Environment. In collaboration with faculty from Duke University, the Nicholas School of the Environment, and the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions, our medical scientists will explore connections between the environmental and human health. Topics include the effects of chemical exposure on neurodevelopment, the impact of the environment on the spread of disease, and much more.
Dr. Fulkerson has again designated funds to Duke Nursing and the Duke Human Simulation and Patient Safety Center.
Duke nurses make a difference in the health and well being of our patients and families. Friends of Duke Medicine funds will help nurses throughout Duke University Health System attend educational seminars and national nursing conferences. These funds also support our rewards and recognition program for excellence in nursing practice.
The Human Simulation and Patient Safety Center is used by medical and nursing students, physicians-in-training, and professional staff to safely practice medical procedures, and their individual roles, on a care-giving team. The center employs state-of-the-art, high-tech simulators and video equipment for team training.
Your gift helped the Friends of Duke Medicine Fund have another successful year. On behalf of our physicians, caregivers, and scientists, thank you for helping us touch and improve the lives of individuals in our community and around the world.
