Basic Sciences Graduate EducationDuke's PhD programs in the basic sciences draw to the Medical Center's research laboratories some of the nation's most talented and promising young biomedical scientists. Hundreds of students are enrolled in Duke's respected programs in biochemistry, biological anthropology and anatomy, biology, biological chemistry, cell biology, cell and molecular biology, developmental biology, genetics, molecular genetics and microbiology, immunology, structural biology and biophysics, molecular cancer biology, neurobiology, pathology, pharmacological sciences, pharmacology and cancer biology, and toxicology. Approximately 17 percent of Duke medical students are enrolled in the Medical Scientist Training Program, which leads to both the MD and a PhD in one of the basic sciences. Created to train highly qualified students as physician-scientists, the Program has graduated more MD-PhDs than any such program in the country and is highly regarded nationally.
